Crafts around the Lake

There are several smaller villages around the lake that are famous for their crafts and markets:

Tocuaro: Internationally renown for carvings of wooden masks.

Arocutin: Beautiful broidered textiles, wooden figures and clay utensils.

Puacuaro: Mats, fans, baskets, mirror-frames, animal-figures etc. made of vegetable fibers.

Opongio: Restaurants with delicious typical food from the region. There is also a traditional Mezcal-Still.

Tzintzuntzan: Tourist market and Monastery with awesome old olive trees and nearby pre-Columbian pyramids.

Quiroga: One mile of shops with all kinds of crafts from the region.

Day of the Dead

Well, of course a must see if you are around in November! A tip if you want to avoid the crowd; Check out the small villages like Ihuatzio, Arocutin, Cucuchuchu and Jaracuaro around the lake. They have beautifully decorated cemeteries. If you plan to see Janitzio, its better to take the boat early, around 8 PM. It's supposed to get very crowded later at night! Find more information and links on the subject on the "FAQ's" page.
